Climate change will alter the mix of vegetation on 49 percent of Earth's land surface by the end of this century, scrambling and shifting existing ecosystems, according to a new study. Researchers at NASA and the California Institute of Technology say the changing climate will also convert 37 percent of the world's land ecosystems from one type -- such as tundra, forest or grassland -- into another by 2100. Those vegetation shifts are likely to affect animals and insects that have evolved to live among particular plant species and within certain temperature and precipitation ranges, said the study's lead author, independent scientist Jon Bergengren. "Animals that are dependent on plants will either have to migrate with the plants, if the plants can successfully migrate, or hang on with plants that are struggling to survive," said Bergengren, who conducted the research as a postdoctoral fellow at Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "Either way, there are problems." Bergengren said that widespread human development will complicate and in some cases prevent plants and animals from migrating to new habitats as climate change alters existing ecosystems. "A lot of times, when a plant or animal wants to migrate, it runs into a monoculture agricultural zone, or it runs into a city," he said. The study, published by the journal Climatic Change, is based on the output of a computer model of vegetation change.

and FREEDOM. and LIBERTY FOR ALL!On the other hand, the life of a religious person, a truly religious person, has absolutely nothing to do with these principles.  These principles, according to a religious person, are only important insofar as they give us a chance to then fulfill our mission in life.A religious person says, “Okay, I have rights.  Wonderful.  Now what?”And that is what the religious need to be discussing in the secular world.  They need to leave the dustheap of debates and embrace their own worldview.  A worldview that goes beyond rights and towards something higher. And gay marriage is the perfect opportunity for such a discussion to take place. Why?Because the whole freaking world is finally talking about marriage again!  Can you believe it?  A society in which a divorce happens once every 13 seconds. Where 41 percent of first marriages, 60 percent of second marriages, and 73 percent of third marriages, end in divorce.  A country where marriage is often an after-thought to a career, and where having children is an increasing rarity. But all of a sudden, this crazy, messed up, divorce-crazy, marriage-avoiding, career-obsessed, country wants to talk about marriage.Thank freaking G-d.And what are we doing?  We’re debating rights!  We’re point our fingers down at these people, telling them they’re horrible, just plain EVIL SINNERS!  We’re sickened! You know what that sounds like to me?  Reactive living.  A life focused on fighting rather than creating.Religious folks, let’s stop debating rights, and let’s start explaining what it means to have a mission.  Let’s stop arguing about whether people should be allowed to marry, and let’s discuss what marriage actually is.Let’s take the national debate beyond breaking down barriers, and focus on the foundation that needs to be created after those barriers are broken down.Otherwise, we’re just parents in denial, desperately trying to lock the door to control our world while our children are sneaking out the window. Data Execution Prevention, otherwise known as DEP, is a set of technologies incorporated into Windows XP SP2 and later that prevents code from being run in certain regions of memory that are not authorized. This helps to prevent all kinds of attacks and exploits, that normally would be able to run freely, from executing. Data Execution Prevention comes in two flavors, hardware-enforced DEP and software-enforced DEP.Most users will never need to worry about DEP because it works in the background and normally only protects Windows system binaries or programs that “opt-in”. However, if DEP is turned on for all programs, it can cause issues with certain programs.DEP will sometimes shut down a program or process without any notification if it violates DEP.

You might be familiar with the story of Frankenstein, probably from one of those many, many, many adaptations or pop culture references. It’s one of the most recognizable pieces of fiction in the world: mad scientist, skulking assistant, lightning strike, big green monster…and yet, there’s quite a bit more to the original tale than most people know.As yet another adaptation takes over the big screen this weekend with Victor Frankenstein, promising to "reinvent" the old story for the modern age (as if we haven't heard that one before), here are 10 Facts You Need to Know About Frankenstein (And His Monster)10 Universal's Iconic FrankensteinBy far the most popular image of Frankenstein (or more specifically, his monster) is the one that jumps into your head as soon as you hear the name: big guy, flat head, possibly purple eyelids and green skin with tattered clothing. This particular version comes from the 1931 Universal movie Frankenstein, and has made quite the impression on pop culture.Universal is also responsible for other horror movie staples, with their early repertoire including Dracula (1931), The Mummy (1932), The Invisible Man (1933) and The Wolf Man (1941).

It’s that time of year again: student teachers are graduating and looking for jobs, and supply teachers & LTOs are looking to find work for September. In much the same way as students should never be surprised by the material/questions on our tests, I firmly believe that a school board’s interview process, question topics, and look-fors should not be a secret or come as a surprise to any teacher.A few acronyms to get out of the way:OT: Occasional Teacher (day to day supply teacher)LTO: Long Term Occasional (a teacher hired for a duration of minimum 10 days and maximum of one semester).Contract Teacher (a permanent position; don’t ask me why they coined this as “contract” which would mean short-term work in any other industry)DISCLAIMER: While I am an OCDSB secondary teacher, I am not in charge of any part of the hiring process. Everything written in this post reflects my understanding of the process at the time of posting and is not an official account of the OCDSB’s hiring process.

How can we as adults help children to achieve their potential. How can we aid them to learn. Well first we need to understand how they learn, and the Swiss scientist and development psychologist, Jean Piaget, who died in 1980,  gave the world insights into the cognitive development of children identifying that what we as adults might just refer to as ‘play‘ is a systematic process of learning that has identifiable stages from birth to adulthood.Theory of PlayJean Piaget was quoted in his later years as saying “Our real problem is – what is the goal of education.

2012 Nissan Leaf winter testWe get asked a lot whether winter weather makes electric cars impractical. Short answer: No.We even rounded up some of the best electric-cars-in-winter stories last month. But it's a fact of physics that a plug-in electric car will have a longer range in temperate Southern California than in the icy steppes of the Northeast, upper Midwest, and much of Canada. We've done our own cold-weather test of the 2012 Nissan Leaf, for instance.

He argued that this was implausible because, based on the country’s population at the time, a federal standing army couldn’t field more than 25,000–30,000 men.

Increased levels of anxiety and depression as teenage experience changes over time 14 March 2012 The experience of teenagers has changed considerably over the last 30-40 years, including a significant increase in the rate of anxiety, depression and behaviour problems according to new research from the Nuffield Foundation. In addition to increased levels of anxiety and depression, today’s teenagers are more likely to be in education and less likely to be in paid employment than their counterparts in the 70s and 80s, leading to a longer and less structured period of adolescence. Family life for teenagers has also changed. Young people in the 2000s are twice as likely to have experienced the divorce of their parents than young people 30 years ago, but they are also more likely to spend ‘quality time’ with their parents, and to share information about where they are going and who they are with. These findings are from the Nuffield Foundation’s Changing Adolescence Programme and are published today by Policy Press in a new book, Changing Adolescence: Social trends and mental health, which explores how social change has affected young people's behaviour, mental health and transitions toward adulthood. Anxiety, depression and antisocial behaviour The proportion of 15/16 year olds reporting that they frequently feel anxious or depressed has doubled in the last 30 years, from 1 in 30 to 2 in 30 for boys and 1 in 10 to 2 in ten for girls. The proportion of 15/16 year olds with behaviour problems (as rated by parents) also increased, from approximately 7 per cent in 1974, to approximately 15 per cent in 1999. There is evidence that these increases have levelled in more recent years. For example, there was no rise in symptoms of emotional problems between 1999 and 2004.Time use and education The youth labour market has collapsed in recent decades.

principle という英単語は「原理、原則」という意味で理解している方が多いと思いますが、「主義、行動の基準、根本方針」という意味もあるんですよね。実際こっちの意味の方が重要なんですよね。 principle という英単語は、ラテン語で prince(王子=第一の場所を占める人) を意味する priceps の派生語である principium(= beginning, origin, source)という語に由来しています。「はじまり、起源、源」 ↓ ↓ 「基盤」 「はじめにあるもの」→「原理、原則」 ↓ 「思考体系・信念体系の基盤」 ↓ 「主義、行動の基準」Sounds great. When non-free media files (images, videos, and audio clips) are used on Wikipedia, a justification for their usage, called a non-free use rationale (or use rationale or fair use rationale), must be presented in the Help:File description page, explaining how the file is used in a way consistent with Wikipedia's non-free content criteria. This justification will help other users determine if the claim of fair use could apply to a wide variety of uses or a narrow range of uses. It will also help determine if the given claim of fair use is appropriate for Wikipedia in the first place.

Immigration Restriction Act 1901Parliament of AustraliaAn Act to place certain restrictions on Immigration and to provide for the removal from the Commonwealth of prohibited ImmigrantsDate of Royal Assent23 December 1901Date repealed1 June 1959Introduced byEdmund Barton (5 June 1901)Amends1905, 1908, 1910, 1912, 1920, 1924, 1925, 1930, 1932, 1933, 1935, 1940, 1948, 1949Repealing legislationMigration Act 19581]Status:RepealedThe Immigration Restriction Act 19012] was an Act of the Parliament of Australia which limited immigration to Australia and formed the basis of the White Australia policy which sought to exclude all non-Europeans from Australia. The law granted immigration officers a wide degree of discretion to prevent individuals from entering Australia. The Act prohibited various classes of people from immigrating and provided for illegal immigrants to be deported.3]Because of opposition from the British government, a more explicit racial policy was avoided in the legislation, with the control mechanism for people deemed undesirable being a dictation test, which required a person seeking entry to Australia to write out a passage of fifty words dictated to them in any European language, not necessarily English, at the discretion of an immigration officer.4] The test was not designed to allow immigration officers to evaluate applicants on the basis of language skills, rather the language chosen was always one known beforehand that the person would fail.5]The initial bill was based on similar legislation in South Africa.5]Provisions of the ActGeneralThe Act specifically prohibited various classes of people from immigrating, including people with infectious diseases and people who had recently been imprisoned.6]The Act automatically allowed certain classes of people to enter Australia, such as all members of the British Army or the Royal Navy, the captain and crew of any ship visiting an Australian port, any person sent on the business of a foreign government, family members of permitted immigrants, and former residents of Australia.7]Prospective immigrants were allowed to apply for a Certificate of Exemption, issued by the Minister for External Affairs (or a representative), which would exempt a person from the provisions of the Act such as the dictation test for a specified time.

A kickstart lever is to a motorcycle like a bench seat is to a car: It's something modern vehicles don't have anymore, but a piece of nostalgia that's often missed. It was a sweeter time when gas was cheap and you couldn't start your motorcycle without working up a hard sweat. Most modern dirt bikes have a kickstart, but road bikes have long since lost the kicker for an electric start, except for the occasional odd-ball like the 2015 Yamaha SR400.READ MORE: Scars, Grease And A Kickstart: Learning To Love Your First Motorcycle | RideApartREAD MORE: 2014 Yamaha SR400 Review | RideApartMaybe a better analogy would be to compare a kickstart to a carburetor since many modern cars and motorcycles are missing the carbs.

by Matt SlickThis is a difficult question to answer.  I'm a theologian and not a biologist, and I make no pretense to being an expert in the latter field.  Nevertheless,  I hope to contribute meaningful ideas into the discussion.  First of all, I think the question is insufficient.  It should be, "Is an embryo in a woman's womb human by nature?"  The initial question isn't complete since we normally think of a human as anything from a baby to an old man or woman.  The revised question deals more honestly with the issue of the nature of the life in the womb and broadens the discussion. In order to answer the question, we need to define what it means to be human.  I think the answer lies in understanding two main concerns:  the physical aspect and essence of humanness.  By physical, I mean the obvious external appearance and function of the human body that is governed and constructed by biological distinctions.  By essence of humanness, I mean the part of the human that is essential to being human--separate from the physical aspect.  I'll explain more on this later. The PhysicalPhysically, we are bilaterally symmetrical.  That is, the human body can be divided vertically into two halves that are mirror images of each other.  We have 46 chromosomes, walk erect, have large brains, opposable thumbs, etc.

The Zone of Proximal Development and ScaffoldingThe Zone of Proximal Development and ScaffoldingBy Saul McLeod, updated 2018The concept, "Zone of Proximal Development" (ZPD) was developed by Soviet psychologist and social constructivist Lev Vygotsky (1896 – 1934).The ZPD referes to the difference between what a learner can do without help and what he or she can achieve with guidance and encouragement from a skilled partner. Thus, the term “proximal” refers those skills that the learner is “close” to mastering. Ethnic conflict in Western ChinaThis article is about recent unrest and fighting in Xinjiang. For the uprisings and battles in Xinjiang during the 1930s and 1940s, see Xinjiang Wars. The Xinjiang conflict is a conflict in China's far-west province of Xinjiang centred around the Uyghurs, a Turkic minority ethnic group who make up the largest group in the region.9]10]Factors such as the massive state-sponsored migration of Han Chinese from the 1950s to the 1970s, government policies promoting Chinese cultural unity and punishing certain expressions of Uyghur identity,11]12] and heavy-handed responses to separatist terrorism13]14] have contributed to tension between Uyghurs, and state police and Han Chinese.15] This has taken the form of both frequent terrorist attacks and wider public unrest (such as the July 2009 Ürümqi riots). After secondary education, China allows Hui students to study with an imam.36] China does not enforce the law against children attending mosques on non-Uyghurs outside Xinjiang.38] Since the 1980s Islamic private schools (Sino-Arabic schools (中阿學校)) have been permitted by the Chinese government in Muslim areas, excluding Xinjiang because of its separatist sentiment.b]40]41]42]Hui Muslims employed by the state, unlike Uyghurs, are allowed to fast during Ramadan.

Mark Twain [pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835-1910), quintessential American humorist, lecturer, essayist, and author wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876); "Tom did play hookey, and he had a very good time. He got back home barely in season to help Jim, the small colored boy, saw next-day's wood and split the kindlings before supper--at least he was there in time to tell his adventures to Jim while Jim did three-fourths of the work. Tom's younger brother (or rather half-brother) Sid was already through with his part of the work (picking up chips), for he was a quiet boy, and had no adventurous, trouble-some ways."--Ch.

Over half of the population in the world’s 47 least developed countries (LDCs) live on less than $1.25 per day and billions of people still do not have the services and employment necessary for the enjoyment of a decent quality of life. Yet many LDCs have made significant progress in economic development as measured by national statistics and indicators. The Local Development Finance team at UNCDF addresses three problems that prevent the benefits of growth from reaching all sections of the population and all parts of the territory:Fiscal resources and domestic capital markets are not investing in local governments and local economies in a way that promotes sustainable and equitable growth, which is holding back structural transformation and economic resilience;Local governments and local economies are not able to attract development finance and therefore the benefits of growth are bypassing many populations;Finance is not available for local catalytic infrastructure projects with high impact in critical themes such as women’s economic empowerment, climate change, clean energy and food security.UNCDF’s Local Development Finance Practice is a centre of excellence and innovative fund for local government finance and local economic development finance in the world’s 47 LDCs.MissionTo promote and support transformative investment through local governments and domestic banks in LDCs by piloting and scaling up innovative financing mechanisms and policies in the public and private sectors.VisionLDCs will have robust policy environment, strong institutional capacity and effective financing vehicles that contribute to diverse, inclusive and resilient local economies and societies by 2030. Graduation from LDC status to middle income country status will benefit all sections of the population.ApproachWe adopt a transformative impact financing approach to promote service delivery, infrastructure investment and local economic development that retains value within the local territory.
