“We come to books,” David L. Ulin writes in “The Lost Art of Reading,” “to be challenged and confounded, made to question our assumptions.” With this principle in mind, here is the news that Ulin brings in this slim, meandering book: that reading is “an act of contemplation”; that such an act becomes more difficult in “our overnetworked society, where every buzz and rumor is instantly blogged and tweeted, and it is not contemplation we desire but an odd sort of distraction”; that the analphabetic anger of anonymous Internet comment threads is emblematic of a “degraded cultural conversation” in which “the ability to carry out a logical argument” has been lost; that technology brings a boon but also a burden: “We are never disconnected, never out of touch”; and lastly, coming full circle, that in this “landscape of distraction,” reading becomes not just an act of contemplation but one of “resistance.”All of which is true enough, but that’s precisely the problem. While I occasionally disagreed with Ulin’s book, I wasn’t once challenged or confounded or even surprised by it.

Pamela Paul, the editor of The New York Times Book Review, hopped on reddit yesterday afternoon to answer questions about the Book Review and the recently published list of their editors’ picks for the 10 best books of the year. In addition to recommending a number of great books and writers (Nora Ephron, Christopher Hitchens, George Orwell, George Eliot, and more), dubbing Colson Whitehead one of the greatest novelists of our time, and suggesting that, of the Times‘s Top 10, a Trump supporter might most enjoy The North Water, Paul shed a little light on how things work at the Book Review (a question that some of us have been asking ourselves lately!). Below, find a few things you may or may not have known about how books are assigned, reviewed, and considered for the year-end lists of the paper of record.Way more books come out every year than you think.“The Book Review at The Times reviews about 1% of the books that come out in any given year.”Planning for the Year-End Notable Books List starts in January.Article continues after advertisement“Basically, the entire year is a winnowing process that culminates in the 10 Best Books.

Some 50 years ago, the region near Nigeria’s Atlantic coast provided the setting for Chinua Achebe’s haunting novel of a world torn asunder by the vicissitudes of Anglo-imperial expansion. To capture the tragedy of colonialism in that account, “Things Fall Apart,” Achebe looked to Yeats’s poem “The Second Coming” for inspiration: “Things fall apart; the center cannot hold; / Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, / The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere / The ceremony of innocence is drowned; / The best lack all conviction, while the worst / Are full of passionate intensity.”The drowning of innocence and the anarchic consequences of the global reach are hardly confined to Achebe’s Nigeria of yesteryear or to the colonial underbelly of Britain’s “civilizing” mission.

In his second novel, The Last Queen, C.W. Gortner sets out to dispel the myth of “Juana La Loca” (Juana The Mad), choosing to portray her as a headstrong, capable woman worthy of the Spanish crown she inherited whose power was suppressed by the ambitious men who surrounded her.Young Juana spends her childhood enduring long and arduous travels as her parents fight to unify Spain and defend it from invaders.

For all the wit and beauty and visceral punch Stephen Sondheim has brought to musical theater, it can be easy to forget that his collaborators have sometimes proven less consistent. His first Broadway flop, 1964’s Anyone Could Whistle, boasts a glorious score, but the libretto—by Arthur Laurents, who had previously teamed with Sondheim on West Side Story and Gypsy—is a mess.1981’s similarly short-lived Merrily We Roll Along features a book by George Furth, also Sondheim’s partner on Company. While Merrily, based on a Kaufman and Hart play with the same title, produced such enduring favorites as “Not a Day Goes By,” “Good Thing Going,” and “Old Friends,” its account of three pals struggling in their creative lives and with each other—moving backward in time, starting with the trio in jaded middle age and ending in their bright-eyed youth—has challenged even the most resourceful directors.

The United States of the twentieth century has often been depicted as a consumer nation, a culture in which-more so than any prior one-the notion of “the good life” relies upon the ready and easy availability of a bounty of goods and services. Yet it a question whether this shift bodes well or ill for our democratic political traditions, our natural environment, or our global future, whether we should be proud of the manifold wealth we have created or instead ashamed of our prodigal capitalist system.

What is a review of the literature?A literature review is an account of what has been published on a topic by accredited scholars and researchers. Occasionally you will be asked to write one as a separate assignment (sometimes in the form of an annotated bibliography—see the bottom of the next page), but more often it is part of the introduction to an essay, research report, or thesis. In writing the literature review, your purpose is to convey to your reader what knowledge and ideas have been established on a topic, and what their strengths and weaknesses are.

RadiobroadcastingThe United StatesThe first known radio program in the United States was broadcast by Reginald Aubrey Fessenden from his experimental station at Brant Rock, Mass., on Christmas Eve, 1906. Two musical selections, the reading of a poem, and a short talk apparently constituted the program, which was heard by ship wireless operators within a radius of several hundred miles. Following the relaxation of military restrictions on radio at the conclusion of World War I, many experimental radio stations—often equipped with homemade apparatus—were operated by amateurs.

Ceremonial Oath was one of the many less successful bands in the famous Swedish death metal scene of the early 90s. They founded, played for a few years, and got a few releases out on the market before folding quietly without anyone really caring much; a scenario they shared with many other bands of the time such as Goddefied and Authorize. However, Ceremonial Oath had one thing that set them apart from aforementioned bands: the band members would later create or join several highly successful bands on the metal scene, and these bands were not just blatantly duplicating the Ceremonial Oath sound.

StepsPart 1Learning Important Concepts in Inorganic Chemistry1Investigate the atom and its atomic structure. Being a branch of chemistry, inorganic chemistry requires that you understand the basic structure of an atom and the properties that arise from this structure. Knowing atomic structure and the way in which atoms can interact with each other is essential to excelling in inorganic chemistry.[2]Have a firm knowledge and understanding of atomic mass, electron configuration, atomic number, protons, neutrons, electrons, etc.2Memorize the periodic table. This may seem a little crazy, but memorizing the periodic table will help you have a fundamental understanding of the elements, how they’re arranged, and how they interact with each other. Knowing the group and period of an element gives you information about its structure, electron shells, valence electrons, and reactivity with other elements.[3]The columns of the periodic table are called “groups” while the rows are called “periods.”The table is split up into metals and non-metals.[4]Knowing the chemical symbol of an element will also help you when working with inorganic equations.3Understand chemical bonding of elements. The types of bonds that form between elements affect how a compound will react with other compounds.

What we learned from Hurricane Katrina: No matter what happens, it’s never the governor’s fault. What we’ve learned from the contaminated drinking water in Flint, Mich.: It’s always the governor’s fault.A bit of background first.Flint has relatively high levels of lead in its drinking water, a cause for legitimate concern. This is a result not so much of the source of its drinking water, the Flint River, as of the city’s failure to treat the water, which, without the proper additives, leaches lead and other contaminants from pipes.Prior to and separate from the current water crisis, Flint was in a state of financial ruination.

Previous (Gothic Revival)Next (Gottfried Haberler)Gothic fiction began in the United Kingdom with The Castle of Otranto (1764) by Horace Walpole. It depended for its effect on the pleasing terror it induced in the reader, a new extension of literary pleasures that was essentially Romantic. It is the predecessor of modern horror fiction and, above all, has led to the common definition of "gothic" as being connected to the dark and horrific.Prominent features of gothic fiction include terror (psychological as well as physical), mystery, the supernatural, ghosts, haunted houses and Gothic architecture, castles, darkness, death, decay, “doubles,” madness (especially mad women), secrets, hereditary curses, and persecuted maidens.Important ideas concerning and influencing the Gothic include: Anti-Catholicism, especially criticism of Catholic excesses such as the Inquisition (in southern European countries such as Italy and Spain); romanticism of an ancient Medieval past; melodrama; and parody (including self-parody).Origins of the GothicThe term "gothic" was originally a disparaging term applied to a style of medieval architecture (Gothic architecture) and art (Gothic art).

12 Amazing Haji Lane Hangouts I recently brought a Canadian friend of mine on a tour around our island, introducing her to the la's and lor's of Singaporean lingo while exploring various tourist hotspots. With both of us being A-list shopaholics, I was compelled to bring her to the whimsical and charming Haji Lane.  Haji Lane, and the lanes surrounding it, is now home to more than vogue fashion labels.

New MoonStephenie MeyerPublished 2006        563 pagesSynopsisBella has been going out with her vampire boyfriend Edward for six blissfully happy months.  The only thing that worries her is his steadfast refusal to even consider making her into a vampire like him.  As the day of her eighteenth birthday rolls around she feels less than happy because she is now older than Edward, who will never age past seventeen. To celebrate her birthday Edward takes Bella to a birthday party at his family home but when a stupid accident that leaves Bella covered in blood and nearly triggers a feeding frenzy in Jasper, Edward’s brother, the party falls somewhat flat. Edward suddenly becomes more distant towards to Bella and finally he tells her that he and his family are leaving Forks, to never return, and he no longer wants to see her.  Edward is Bella’s whole world and his abandonment is a harsh blow.  Her whole world falls apart and as she becomes withdrawn from the world she soon loses most of her friends becoming even more isolated and lonely.  When she does something dangerous she starts hallucinating and thinks she can hear Edward telling her not to do anything stupid and to be more careful.  This leads to a whole new range of interests for Bella including learning to ride a motorbike and cliff diving because she feels that he is still with her at those times.  Her old friend Jacob Black becomes her partner in crime, fixing up her motorbike for her and teaching her to ride it.  Although the pain of Edward’s departure never leaves Bella, Jacob soon becomes her best friend and he helps to fill some of the voids in her life.Jacob himself is no ordinary boy and soon Bella discovers that part of his Quileute heritage is to be cursed to be a werewolf.  Certain members of the tribe turn into werewolves in their teenage years in response to the presence of vampires.  Werewolves and vampires are natural enemies and the enmity runs deep on both sides. Alice returns to Forks and although she brings no news of Edward with her, her extraordinary gift of being able to see the future soon tells her that Edward is heading on a path of self destruction that only Bella can advert.  But will Bella be in time to stop the tragedy.

They were shot outside of their convent by rebel guerrilla forces during a civil war that lasted 14 years and killed more than 250,000 people. In her new book, The Cost of Compassion, Barbara Ann Pawlikowski brings to life these ordinary women. Her book paints a picture of them not just as glorified martyrs to the faith, but as real-life women who cared deeply about their vocations and the people with whom they worked.

Perhaps you’ve recently jumped on the antioxidant supplement bandwagon, or maybe you remain wary of manufacturers’ liberal use of these latest buzzwords, unsure of whether they’re safe or effective? Many people have heard that foods with antioxidants protect us from free radical damage, which is responsible for many of the effects of aging on both the body and mind.

University of Tennessee College of Dentistry – A “Dream” ReviewMy dental school ID. I look like I’m 12 years old! It’s nearly 25 years after graduating from the gruesome experience of dental school, and I’m STILL having nightmares about it.  Literally.  Last night I dreamed that I had to retake a series of tests on the basic sciences.  I was worried I had forgotten too much about the basic sciences.  And, this is not the first time.  I’ve had “dental school dreams” many times – probably 2 – 3 times a year.Just to be clear up front…  I love being a dentist.  I guess that should be a foregone conclusion for those who know me.  But, even if this blog is your first introduction to me, the blog alone is evidence enough.  Dental school didn’t ruin me for dentistry, thankfully.  I “blossomed” after dental school.  A lot!I’m 48 years old, and I still occasionally have dreams / nightmares about school.  It really does speak strongly about the mental “trauma” exacted upon us.  I know I’m certainly not the only one.  Many dentists tell me they still have school dreams, too.Every school is different, and there are some exceptions, but the systematic hazing in dental school seems to be nearly universal.  Full-time faculty were the worst and usually only offenders.  Part-time faculty were sought out by students whenever they were available in hopes of being treated at least humanely.Mentors?  No.  TORmentors?  Yes.At the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry (UTCHS), some of the full-time faculty ruthlessly berated students.  It was done in front of other students and even patients in the clinic.  Some instructors were heard bragging to others about how they “gigged” a student.  Lab wax-ups were smashed.  Freshly-placed amalgams were dug at with sharp explorers creating “shy” spots, so they would have to be re-done… again and again.Late night in the ZIP house lab, trying in our first dentures.  This photo cracked me up back then, and it still does now.Dental school… HOO!  What is it good for?  Absolutely nothin’… say it again. At UT Memphis, some of our instructors even challenged some of my classmates physically when there was a disagreement.  “Boy…. maybe we should step outside and settle this.”  This reportedly happened more than once.  This is DENTAL SCHOOL!Good ol’ Dr.

One of the first challenges you’ll face when publishing your book is getting book reviews. Book reviews are important because 1) Books with reviews sell more copies, 2) Many book promotion sites require a minimum number of reviews to use their service and 3) Verified reviews are an additional metric Amazon can use to promote your book. Most resources about getting book reviews recommend: – Sending out advanced review copies (ARCs) to readers – Asking family and friends to review your book – Soliciting bloggers and popular Amazon reviewers to review your book. These tactics can work but they have some drawbacks: 1) it takes a lot of time, 2) you have no guarantee that you will actually get reviews, 3) the reviews may not be verified or may be from a person who is not your target reader (which can confuse the Amazon algorithm) and 4) Amazon may pull the reviews done if they suspect the reviews are not legitimate .The Solution: Get Book Reviews With Book PromotionRunning a book promotion is a proven way to get reviews.

Oyster Hotel ReviewSceneThis all-suites condominium is quieter and more relaxing than most Vegas hotels, yet close to the fun.Just as the massive Mandalay Bay has the elegant, upscale THEhotel tucked into the hotel for guests who want to stay out of the fray, the massive MGM Grand offers a quiet refuge within the grounds as well. In this case, it's three luxury condominium towers located behind the casino, five pools, lion habitat, celebrity restaurants, Cirque du Soleil theater, and shopping center. While there isn't much to do around the condos -- three small pools and one sleepy bar, but not even a full-service restaurant -- that's the idea. Guests seek out the Signature for a quiet and relaxed atmosphere that's a five-minute walk from everything that the MGM Grand has to offer.

Unable to address Texas senator Ted Cruz’s questions about “the Pause” — the apparent global-warming standstill, now almost 19 years long — at Tuesday’s meeting of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight, Sierra Club president Aaron Mair, after an uncomfortable pause of his own, appealed to authority: “Ninety-seven percent of scientists concur and agree that there is global warming and anthropogenic impact,” he stated multiple times. The relevant exchange begins at 1:39 (though the whole segment is worth watching):The myth of an almost-unanimous climate-change consensus is pervasive. Last May, the White House tweeted: “Ninety-seven percent of scientists agree: #climate change is real, man-made and dangerous.” A few days later, Secretary of State John Kerry announced, “Ninety-seven percent of the world’s scientists tell us this is urgent.”“Ninety-seven percent of the world’s scientists” say no such thing. There are multiple relevant questions: (1) Has the earth generally warmed since 1800.

To Kill a Mockingbird is one of those books that almost everyone reads at some point in their lives. Whether you've been forced to read it at school, or you've had a look because everyone's been urging you to, most people have their own personal experience of reading Mockingbird. The book is about Atticus Finch, who appears as an unconventional hero and role model due to his morality rather than his physical capabilities. The theme of morals is apparent throughout the whole novel, especially in relation to religion and perception of sin.

One of such tasks is a critique and often we are asked ‘what is an article critique’, as it is not a regular task and has some specific structural and content requirements. If you want to learn how to critique an article, you should first have a clear understanding of what this assignment is about. Generally, it is an objective analysis of any piece of work (not depending on its genre), which includes your personal thoughts on the subject.

Like clockwork, every September the entire tech world gets excited for the newest Apple device. The combination of a premium build, unmatched system performance, and tightly integrated software and services delivers what’s considered to be the gold standard in smartphone user experience.Over the past five years, Apple’s modem supplier was Qualcomm, but this year, Apple has taken a different approach with the decision to source two instead of one baseband chipset suppliers: Qualcomm and Intel. This created two distinct RF SKUs, one limited to GSM/WCDMA/LTE support (A1778, A1784), powered by Intel’s modem, and one with GSM/CDMA/WCDMA/TD-SCDMA/LTE support (A1660, A1661) powered by Qualcomm’s modem. On the one hand, most high-end flagship devices launched this year are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820, with X12 Category 12 integrated modem (MDM9645M discrete part).

“If you believe in everything, you will end up not believing in anything at all,” warns Pi’s dad, who is committed to the supremacy of reason and who is, as rationalists often are in the imaginations of the devout, a bit of a grouch about it. But this piece of skeptical paternal wisdom identifies a serious flaw in “Life of Pi,” which embraces religion without quite taking it seriously, and is simultaneously about everything and very little indeed.

Nick Naylor states that, “The beauty of argument is that if you argue correctly, you are never wrong” (Reitman, 2005). The underlying concern in the film “Thank You For Smoking” is the adverse effects that arise from smoking cigarettes. However, the degree of truth and perception of the public regarding the subject is determined by the strength of the argument presented.

Over the past several months I have noticed from reading various magazines, club newsletters, and online forums, that there has been a lot of interest in finishing models from the "Shelf of Doom;" that is to say, models that were started some time ago but never completed. So this my oldest model from that dreaded "Shelf of Doom."  This model of an AH-1Q using the classic 1/32-scale Revell kit goes back to at least 1982.BackgroundThe inspiration for building this was an AH-1Q that I saw (and photographed) on my base in in 1981. I didn't know it at the time, but the "Q" model was a somewhat rare and short-lived interim model of what became known as the "TOW Cobra."  This would prove to be a problem later, as good, factual, and reliable information and photos of the "Q" are hard to come by.

March 2019 The Cost of Compassion: Five Women Who Paid the Ultimate Price by Barbara Ann Pawlikowski In 1992 five American women religious, all in their 50s and 60s and living in Liberia, were killed.

How to Choose the Best Translation of the IliadRevealing the Quality and Fidelity Compared to Homer’s Greekby John PrendergastThe one and only Iliad of Homer, the primordial, unrivaled masterpiece of epic adventure about a pivotal battle during the Trojan War should transport readers through the mind of its long-dead composer to an earlier world, where heroes and heroines perform glorious deeds that will live forever in the memory of mankind, and where gods are indivisible from natural things. But all of these reasons, and quite a few more are why we couldn’t resist naming the Acer Chromebook  R 13 as our #1 pick for the top Chromebook of the year. The best Chromebooks out there are like a solid hammer – they do one job, but they do it incredibly well.

Originally shown between 1990 and 1995, the show invited teams of six strangers to take on the maze, completing challenges in order to win crystals that would buy them time in the Crystal Dome, where they are challenged to obtain enough gold tokens to win the “big prize”.

Jaws week isn't over until I say it is! I originally intended to include some thoughts on "The Jaws Log" along with last week's piece, which was originally more of a review of the new Blu-ray. But as that changed (and as I got too busy to finish the book anyway), I realized it'd probably make more sense to do a separate article on Carl Gottlieb's much-loved account of Jaws' chaotic production, as well as the writing process that saw major changes from the best-selling book by Peter Benchley. Originally released in 1975 to coincide with the film's release, the book was expanded for its 25th anniversary and then released in hardcover for the first time for its 30th.
